Mexico takes fifth place in Mayaguez

MAYAGUEZ, Puerto Rico, July 23, 2010 – Mexico defeated Guatemala in straight sets (25-13, 25-22, 25-11) to conclude in fifth place of the women’s volleyball tournament at the XXI Central American and Caribbean Games.

Samantha Bricio, Xitlali Herrera and Claudia Rodriguez each compiled 11 points for Mexico, who totaled 9 blocks, including 4 by Rodriguez. Guatemalan Diana Arias collected 7 points.

“It was another good experience to participate in these Games,” Rodriguez said about her fourth time playing in the regional competition. “It is always source of pride to represent Mexico and meet players from other countries and see the changes. When I started participating Dominican Republic was not the kind of team it is now. I would like to continue playing for my country.”

“It is the first time we have the chance to participate in the Central American and Caribbean Games and it has been a beautiful experience for me and my teammates,” Guatemalan setter Ingrid Lopez said.
